Congressional Candidate Greg Pilkington on Social Security [VIDEO]

“As your Congressman, I will work to put Social Security on a firm financial foundation for today’s retirees.”

Our social security program is at risk. The risk is not coming from the myth that the system is going broke. The risk does come from with in Congress. There is a movement to privatize Social Security which would be disastrous. Of course, there is room for improvements but privatization is not the answer. We cannot allow corporate America to gain an opportunity to profit off this worker funded retirement savings program.

Nearly nine out of ten individuals age 65 and older receive Social Security benefits.

One of the improvements to the social security fund that I will fight for as your Congressman is to increase the tax base.

I would like to see the earnings cap removed. Why shouldn’t the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share?

Any benefit reductions will affect not only the elderly but will also affect many households with young children.

Social Security is relied on by a large percentage of elderly Americans. For many, this is their only source of income. Cuts to this program have real and far-reaching consequences.

Among elderly Social Security beneficiaries, 21% of married couples and about 43% of unmarried persons rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income.

As your Congressman, I will fight for you and support the Social Security program so that you have this protection when you retire.

I will work to expand the tax base so that the program is well-funded. The workers of District 15 should be protected from the members of Congress who are willing to cut this vital program that works to protect the interests of the wealthy.

It is not a “worker funded retirement savings program”! It is a benefits program designed to assist low income retirees.

Absolutely remove the taxable income cap. Also cap the payout when those earned X% over poverty line the last year or two before retirement (whenever that occurred, not a specific age). Not sure this would be legal, but if tax returns show retirement income from personal accounts is X% above poverty then limit SS payout, they don’t need the help. When they cry about having to pay in, remind them it’s not a savings account… just like any other tax. Also remind them of how little employees actually add to the pot compared to employers.
